I visited the Jogja VW Festival #3 in Yogyakarta Indonesia on 17-18-19 November 2017.
The Jogja Volkswagen Festival (JVWF) took place at the Jogja Expo Center (JEC) and it is the biggest indoor VW show in Asia which is organized by Volkswagen Club Yogyakarta.
In 2014 I travelled 4 month trough Indonesia and I saw many old VWs in Medan, Banda Aceh and Java, Bali, Lombok, Sulawesi, Maluku, Papua and Kalimantan. Also at that time I stayed in a Guesthouse in Yogyakarta and the owner is a member of the VW Club Yogyakarta and totally obsessed with VW. And so, the Jogja VW Festival was on my wish list.
In 2017 my wish became reality. After 25 days in the Philippines I travelled from Cebu to Yogyakarta where I arrived on 17th November.
After checking in at the hotel I arrived at 2:30 p.m. at the Jogja VW Show. At that time the event stuff just finished the decoration. The show opened at 15:00 with an opening ceremony and Ron Fleming, the legend from California, signed the “Lucky Draw Cal Look Beetle”. I had a look at the air-cooled cars and my favorite was the Yumos Garage T1 Snail Camper and Porsche Abarth Carrera copy.
Saturday morning was the grand opening ceremony at the Expo Center entrance. I quickly moved outside to the parking lot were many VW fans arrived as ceremonies like that make me tired. Good morning light, interesting aircooled cars with happy VW fans and some cool reflections in the rain puddles made a good start of the day. I enjoyed the outdoor entertainment till about 10:00.
After that I walked around the show with a member of the Volkswagen Club of Yogyakarta. Outside were many VW Kombi food trucks and I had local fish there. In the afternoon I enjoyed cold Bintang beer from the friendly VW fans at the car park.
On Sunday morning it was raining a lot till about 9:15 and it was hard to get out of the bed. Sunday afternoon was trophy time with awards for e.g. best slammed bus, best custom interior and best pick "gettinLOW" for Yumos Garage. Even "AirMighty" had chosen the “AirMighty Award” without being at the meeting, well done.
At the end was the draw of the blue Cal Look Beetle which took quite a while due to some mistakes in the drawing. Anyway, the lucky winner took the Beetle home and I booked a car through “GO CAR” (like Ueber / Grab) to Borobudur for sunrise the next day and flew home to Germany on the 21th November.
It was great to see the VW Show in Yogyakarta and I can recommend it. The next show is 2019. Below a selection of 92 superb pictures of The Jogja Volkswagen Festival 2017.
