I was at the Grossglockner VW Käfer Treffen #4 in Austria from July 12 to 13.
The meeting started on Friday the 12th July in the village of Kals at the Grossglockner Mountain in East Tirol. The VW Beetle fans met at the ski lift parking in the town Grossdorf of the municipality Kals am Grossglockner.
Exactly at 14:00, the VW fans drove up the impressive high mountain road to the Glocknerwinkel / Lucknerhaus parking at the 1920m with a great mountain panorama. Unfortunately, Austria’s highest mountain, the 3798m Grossglockner, was in the clouds.
A bit confusing was, that not all air-cooled Volkswagen made it to the top at the same time. At 15:30 the first VW group went down and at 15:45 the second group was up on the mountain and even a third group was following. Every other year there is a Grossglockner VW bus meeting where all VW Bus fans together cruise up, which is of course much nicer and more interesting.
In the evening was a cozy get-together with music in Kals near the MPreis supermarket.
Saturday was a great cruise from Kals to Staller Saddle to Kronplatz (Plan de Corones) a mountain of the Dolomites in South Tyrol.
Staller Sattel at 2052m is the border between Austria and Italy. There is a narrow one-way pass road with traffic lights. We had to wait at the border and so there was a nice VW traffic jam between Staller Sattel and Obersee lake.
Then we arrived at around 13:00 in Olang at the base of Kronplatz Mountain. After lunch was time to catch the gondola to the 2275m Kronplatz summit. The Kronplatz top has great views of the Dolomites mountain range. I also visited the Reinhold Messner Corones Mountain Museum there.
The return trip to Kals was not with all together. Some VW Fans drove the same way back via Staller Saddle and others made the way back via the town Lienz. I did Staller Saddle and left Kals before the award ceremony took place.
