I visited Borneo Island in Malaysia between April and May 2014 for nature and wildlife.
While travelling through Borneo, I saw lots of palm oil plantations but also a few classic VW Beetles. After my trip through the Malaysian states of Sabah and Sarawak I went to Borneo Indonesia and then to Kuala Lumpur.
The Classic VW Beetle pictures below are taken on Borneo Island in the cities Ranau, Sepilok and Kuching and at the Malay Peninsula in Kuala Lumpur.
Tips to improve the 1200 beetle engine at the time of overhaul:
Worn parts must be replaced
Obtain parts second hand.
1. Use 1300/1600 rocker arms (slightly higher valve lift)
2. Use 1300/1600 camshaft ( different valve timing)
3. Replace oil cooler with the 1600 thicker unit
4. Use a second hand fan housing to suit the oil cooler size
5. Remove the air thermostat because it is not required in the tropics
6. Use a good diesel engine oil of SAE 5-30. Diesel oil has better cleaning agents and better high temperature tolerance. Change every 5000 kms.
These are the basic steps. I worked in tawau till 1995 and then moved to Australia.
